American Idol on FOX is down to the Top 7 Contestants.
Tonight was Competitor’s Choice, which meant the 7 singers got to choose each other’s songs. The dog, Randy made it clear that wasn’t for sabotage though. Caleb couldn’t be forced to sing Dolly Parton in a high falsetto and Dexter couldn’t be made to sing Dream on like ex-judge Steven Tyler. Each contestant got a list of 6 songs to choose from.
Caleb Johnson started the night strong. He is a hot rocker and reminds me of Meatloaf. He sang Family Tree by Kings of Leon that Alex selected for him. Caleb is a judge favorite and was told by Keith Urban said that is was dangerous to put him first in the line up. It set the bar high for the other contestants. Harry liked that Caleb changed the melody up.
Jessica Meuse sang Gunpowder and Lead by Miranda Lambert. Her blue and red hair reminded me of a Macaw parrot. Harry thought she needed to go back to the hotel and listen to dance music. Harry’s voice was straining and he needed a sick day.
Demi Lovato shows up to criticize some performances. Maybe she’s a AI judge in training? After all X Factor is cancelled in the U.S.
CJ Harris sang Gravity. It was a nice performance if a little bit dull. JLo thought he needs to have a performance that brings the audience to their feet.
Dextor Roberts sang Muckalee Creek Water. It was a fun song and Dexter had a lot of energy. His fellow country singer, Keith still was critical. He said they were getting down to the wire and he needed to be spectacular.
Caleb and Jena did a really rocking duet of Gimme Shelter. Although Jena’s bangs seemed to be more of a central focus for JLo. Demi, judge number 4 thought she killed it.
Alex Preston’s song was A Team. Harry said Alex’s performance was his favorite of the whole night. Alex was happy that this time the judge’s “Got It” and it meant a lot to him.
Sam Woolf sang Sail Away. He gave a decent performance and was a crowd pleaser, but he is really the cute, white boy that the teen girls can’t get enough of. Sort of AI’s Justin Bieber without the hair.
Jena sang Creep. Caleb chose her song and Jena is always strong on the piano. She always gets an A and can do no wrong. Keith thought it was a beautiful moment. Harry muttered about why he as a judge does not believe in standing ovations, but it didn’t mean he liked it any less. JLo said Jena had the best performance of the night.
